Walter Hallstein Program (Europe line)

With its Walter Hallstein Program, the Landesstiftung promotes Europe-related internships and study placements.

The Landesstiftung has named its scholarship program, which supports Europe-related internships and study placements, after Walter Hallstein.

This designation commemorates a great European from the earliest days of the European Union. In its obituary in March, 1982, the ‘Times’ described Hallstein, whose adopted city was Stuttgart, aptly as “Mr. Europe”. Walter Hallstein not only played a crucial role as the German chief negotiator in the three foundation phases of the Community in 1951 and 1957, but he also wrote European history as the first President of the European Economic Community and, with his visionary determination, he helped to spread and promote the concept of Europe.

His words show us just how up to date Walter Hallstein still is even today, as they could well still enhance the current debate about a constitution for Europe: “The political forces in our work keep driving us forward.
It will one day be necessary to give them a form that is adopted from the construction kit of federalism, and it will be irrelevant what we decide to call the result.”
