First International Spring School at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences

First International Spring School at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences

As part of the BWS plus project "ADDI", Prof. Sissi Closs from the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences organised the first International Spring School together with her project team and master course. International guests from the Pwani University from Kenya, the Polytechnic University Bucharest from Romania and the University of Leuven from Belgium took part in the event on 28/29 May 2019. The ADDI project (ADDI - ADaptive DIgital learning system development for the expansion of Technical communication and the multi cultural and multi-medial exchange in Kenya and Germany) is financed over 3 years within the framework of the Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM for Students - BWS plus, a program of the Foundation of Baden-Württemberg Stiftung.

More than 50 participants were excited about the interesting, varied and at the same time instructive programme. The two-day event focused in particular on intercultural exchange and the experience of working in an international team - an opportunity for the participants to express their views on foreign cultures and at the same time gain an insight into foreign cultures from the locals. The contents of the Communication and Media Management course were also presented to the participants.

The program on the first day started after the official opening by Prof. Sissi Closs with an interactive seminar on International Leadership by Christian Mustata, Professor at the University Politehnica of Bucharest. After the lunch break, two workshops on "Multicultural Cooking (Swaheli, Belgian Vegan)" and "Getting to know Karlsruhe - digital and interactive" took place with great participation. Thanks to the help of the secretary, Tanja Rüster, a professional, fully equipped kitchen could be organized for the first workshop, in which the two groups prepared delicious Kenyan and vegan dishes. The other group also had a lot of fun with the scavenger hunt app developed especially for the Spring School in the second workshop. The result was not only new knowledge about Karlsruhe, but also a video produced under the professional guidance of Dominik Müller.

On Wednesday, the Dean, Prof. Dr. Michael Tewes, and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schönauer from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Christian Mustata and Prof. Dr. Voichita Ghenghea from Politehnica University Bucharest, Birgitta Meex from KU Leuven and Edith Miano from Pwani University presented the participating universities with their special features and exchange opportunities. Amy Yin, project manager and representative of the Baden-Württemberg Foundation, presented the numerous funding opportunities for students and teachers offered by the Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM for students and BWS plus.

During the lunch break, the tasty food prepared the day before in the cooking workshop was eaten.  In the afternoon, the workshop results and the master projects of the current master course "Content Strategy and Standardized Information Architecture" by Prof. Sissi Closs were presented.

All participants were amazed by the excellent results. The foreign guests were impressed by the professionalism and speed of our students. Everyone agreed that the introduction of a course in "Communication and Media Management" at their universities would also be important and interesting.

Thanks to the great commitment, dedication and talent of the organizational team, Miriam Yaman, Belinda Oechsler, Dominik Müller and Lena Kexel, the first Spring School was a huge success not only in terms of content but also organizationally.
